Evaluating large language models in theory of mind tasks
Eleven large language models (LLMs) were assessed using 40 bespoke false-belief tasks, considered a gold standard in testing theory of mind (ToM) in humans. Each task included a false-belief scenario, three closely matched true-belief control scenarios, and the reversed versions of all four. An LLM had to solve all eight scenarios to solve a single task. Older models solved no tasks; Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT)-3-davinci-003 (from November 2022) and ChatGPT-3.5-turbo (from March 202
When combinations of humans and AI are useful: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Inspired by the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) to augment humans, researchers have studied human-AI systems involving different tasks, systems and populations. Despite such a large body of work, we lack a broad conceptual understanding of when combinations of humans and AI are better than either alone. Here we addressed this question by conducting a preregistered systematic review and meta-analysis of 106 experimental studies reporting 370 effect sizes. We searched an interdiscip
Generative AI and Higher Education: Trends, Challenges, and Future Directions from a Systematic Literature Review
(1) Background: The development of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is transforming higher education. This systematic literature review synthesizes recent empirical studies on the use of GAI, focusing on its impact on teaching, learning, and institutional practices. (2) Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search strategy was employed to locate scientific articles on GAI in higher education published by Scopus and Web of Science between January 2023 and January 2024. “It happened to be the perfect thing”: experiences of generative AI chatbots for mental health
The global mental health crisis underscores the need for accessible, effective interventions. Chatbots based on generative artificial intelligence (AI), like ChatGPT, are emerging as novel solutions, but research on real-life usage is limited. We interviewed nineteen individuals about their experiences using generative AI chatbots for mental health. Participants reported high engagement and positive impacts, including better relationships and healing from trauma and loss. We developed four theme

Promises and challenges of generative artificial intelligence for human learning
Personalized adaptive learning in higher education: A scoping review of key characteristics and impact on academic performance and engagement
Introduction: Higher education institutions face persistent challenges of student retention and academic progress. Personalized adaptive learning has the potential to address these issues as it leverages educational technology to tailor learning pathways according to individual student needs. Objective: To elucidate the key characteristics of personalized adaptive learning in higher education and its impact on academic performance and engagement. Methods: The Joanna Briggs Institute scoping revi
Large Language Models and Empathy: Systematic Review
BACKGROUND: Empathy, a fundamental aspect of human interaction, is characterized as the ability to experience another being's emotions within oneself. In health care, empathy is a fundamental for health care professionals and patients' interaction. It is a unique quality to humans that large language models (LLMs) are believed to lack. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to review the literature on the capacity of LLMs in demonstrating empathy. METHODS: We conducted a literature search on MEDLINE, Google Schola
Artificial intelligence in environmental monitoring: Advancements, challenges, and future directions
• AI-driven pollution detection enhances environmental protection. • Real-time monitoring facilitates prompt interventions for pollution prevention. • Accurate air quality forecasting aids in planning pollution-reducing activities. • AI's role in smart cities fosters sustainable urban development. • AI algorithms integrate diverse data sources for pollution detection. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in environmental monitoring offers accurate disaster forecasts, pollution source
Artificial intelligence alphafold model for molecular biology and drug discovery: a machine-learning-driven informatics investigation
AlphaFold model has reshaped biological research. However, vast unstructured data in the entire AlphaFold field requires further analysis to fully understand the current research landscape and guide future exploration. Thus, this scientometric analysis aimed to identify critical research clusters, track emerging trends, and highlight underexplored areas in this field by utilizing machine-learning-driven informatics methods. Quantitative statistical analysis reveals that the AlphaFold field is en
The global, regional, and national patterns of change in the burden of congenital birth defects, 1990–2021: an analysis of the global burden of disease study 2021 and forecast to 2040
Background: Congenital birth defects (CBDs) present enormous challenges to global healthcare systems. These conditions severely impact patients' health and underscore issues related to socioeconomic development and healthcare accessibility and efficiency. Previous studies have been geographically limited and lacked comprehensive global analysis. This study provides global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) data for four major congenital birth defects-congenital heart
<scp>AI</scp>‐driven adaptive learning for sustainable educational transformation
Abstract This paper scrutinizes how adaptive learning technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming today's education by making it personalized, accessible, and efficient as well as leading people to accepting, addressing, and mitigating sustainable development. Recently, education witnessed a remarkable technological surge driven by various advances in technology, which can be demonstrated by the increase of the number of scientific publications on this topic from just 1 in 199
