What the Act does, in one minute

The AI Act sorts systems by risk. Prohibited: social scoring by public authorities, manipulative systems that cause harm, scraping face images to build recognition databases, and most real-time remote biometric identification in public. High-risk (hiring, credit scoring, education, medical devices, law enforcement): conformity assessment, risk management, human oversight, logging and registration before market. Transparency tier: chatbots must disclose they are AI; deepfakes must be labeled. General-purpose models face documentation and copyright-policy duties, with extra evaluation and incident-reporting obligations above a systemic-risk compute threshold.

Maximum penalties reach €35M or 7% of global turnover for prohibited practices. Enforcement sits with national authorities plus the EU AI Office for general-purpose models.
